The Mayan civilization has been present in Mesoamerica for thousands of years. According to Coe, the stages of the Mayan civilization are as follows: Archaic Period (3000 BC to 1800 BC), Preclassic Period (1800 BC to AD 250), Classic Period (AD 250 to AD 925), and the Postclassic Period (AD 925 to AD 1530) (see The Maya, 10). King Mosiah and his people lived during the Late Preclassic era (300 BC to AD 250).
