Chapter 2

So, he put a ring on it,” Stephanie said bitterly.

She was scrolling through her phone, checking posts on social media regarding Luke Lassiter. According to the latest post, he had put a two-million-dollar ring on her daughter’s hand.

“If he can afford that, he damn sure could push some of those dollars my way,” she muttered.

Stephanie put her phone aside, then picked up her laptop. She thought for a minute then searched, “net worth of Luke Lassiter.” The search revealed a current net worth of $255 million. However, it also indicated if the ex-NFL wide receiver decided to return to the game, he could double that standing.

“Dumbass retired at thirty, leaving money on the table,” Stephanie huffed as she thought. She watched a recent video clip on social media. Luke talked about his retirement, his engagement, and children.

“As you know, I’m from a big family so I’d like a few. However, my fiancée will have a say in the final count.”

Stephanie could not contain her anger at the man. To her way of thinking, he was not sharing the wealth with Sasha. Which meant he was not giving Stephanie an allowance for being Sasha’s mother. She would have to find a way to change that, especially since Al Day, Sasha’s father, was no longer sending funds her way.

Once Sasha graduated from college and moved to New York, Al stopped sending funds directly to her. No worries, though. That had not left her completely dry. Stephanie used the only asset she had to continue living the way she had been accustomed to. She refinanced the four-bedroom, three-bath house he had purchased for them over fifteen years ago. The equity in the house would last her forever, or so she thought. Never having to pay bills before, Stephanie was living the life, spending as she always had, without any limits.

For a few years she would just contact Sasha whenever the mortgage was behind. Sasha would get her caught up, and a few months later Stephanie would be in the same condition. There was an investment account in Sasha’s name that Stephanie had access to. However, after her trip to Virginia, Stephanie learned that she had been removed from the account. As it turned out, the investment firm that handled the account was owned by Tucker Donovan, Al’s right-hand man. He had deemed her actions against her daughter disgraceful and froze her access. That put a stop to her traveling and just about everything else.

Sasha’s father’s side of the family had money, and so did the man she was about to marry. Well, to Stephanie’s way of thinking, Sasha owed her.

Stephanie’s life changed when she gave birth to Sasha at the age of sixteen. Her mother moved her to Georgia and treated her as if she had committed a crime. Stephanie’s mother would not help with the baby, but she demanded that Stephanie pressure Al for money to take care of them all. It didn’t take much pressure. Al purchased them a house in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, and sent money every month to ensure they all lived comfortably. Hell, he even paid for Sasha’s private school, which Stephanie thought was a waste of good money. That money could have gone into her pockets. Because of Al, Stephanie nor Sasha ever wanted for anything.

Now, Stephanie wanted it all. If Sasha was going to have a man, money and a million-dollar ring on her finger, Stephanie felt she deserved the same. At the moment, she had none of that. Even the house she once had mortgage-free was about to be taken, and Sasha was not returning her calls.

“The little bitch,” Stephanie hissed. “Oh, I am going to get my share one way or another.”
