¹⁹ Xenophon, Oeconomicus 4. 2, tells us that: ‘What are called the mechanical arts carry a social stigma, and are rightly dishonoured in our cities. For these arts damage the bodies of those who work at them or supervise them, by compelling the workers to a sedentary life.’
