Not my design at all, although I suppose for the purposes of this catalogue I could have lied. I will, however, confess to having tweaked the original more than a little.
Our dear friend and sometime-neighbour Ann Ortman who designed so many floral greetings cards and post cards for us when we were ‘in trade’ came up with this one when she heard that another friend, Kris Ellam, was covering the panels of the doors and window shutters of my study at Ripplevale Grove with painted representations of the leaves and flowers of nasturtium, my favourite flower. Nasturtium is my favorite because it’s so faithful and requires so little from me. Not unlike a cat. Nigel and I have gathered its seeds from plants encountered all over the world and their blooms have brought huge pleasure both to us and passers by. There is a chair, too, one of Ni’s doing, which benefited from the embrace of the nasturtium’s tendrils.
As I write this on the first day of January 2007, there is a nasturtium blooming in the garden.
