If you prefer, arrange the vegetables in a vessel such as this wooden crate.

What you’ll need

Vessels and containers—a large central platter, small crates, jars, etc.

Twine, toothpicks, and/or reusable adhesive, for securing the arrangement

Produce—select seasonal produce with variations in size and texture but within a tonal palette

Seed packets or vegetable markers—these make great place cards

Vegetables bring a rustic element to table settings. Limit your selection to four or five types within a tonal palette. Try these seasonal combinations to create striking centerpieces and place settings.

Spring: Globe artichokes, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, fennel

Summer: Tomatoes, eggplant, cabbage, bell pepper, zucchini

Autumn: Winter squash, kale, summer squash, garlic, broccoli

Winter: Carrots, Swiss chard, brussels sprouts, fennel

Vessels and containers

Get creative—look in the cupboards for inspiration. A mix of jars, cups, plates, and platters will give variety of height and size, and you can use them to show off produce that might otherwise wilt in water. For a more rustic setting, try wooden crates or a piece of burlap to frame hardier produce in your centerpiece.

Place settings

Individual place settings add a personal touch to the table. Look for small vegetables such as garlic to tie to name cards with twine or ribbon. Seed packets are a lovely way of personalizing each setting.

Garlic, a vegetable marker, and a seed packet create a layered place setting. Choose small produce that will sit well out of water for individual settings.
