ANNIE FANNY: LUMMY’S sassy and frisky snuff-dipping friend who cared for his shoulder injury he suffered during a ferry crossing the Mississippi River from Vicksburg to Desoto, LA in search of Susannah. She’s a mess.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN “BENNY FRANK” TULLOS: third child of Archibald and Mary Tullos, and Lummy’s older brother who moved with his family to Winn Parish from Choctaw County, MS in the mid-1850s. He is foreman on James T. Gilmore’s farm. Lummy and his family in Choctaw Co., MS have not seen nor heard from Ben and family since the moved.
COLUMBUS “LUMMY” NATHAN TULLOS: Archibald and Mary Tullos’s sixth child born in Holmes County, MS in 1834. As the main character in this series, Lummy leaves his home in Choctaw Co., MS in search of his love, a young slave woman named Susannah, which begins his adventurous journey in search of her and a life of peace.
DAN CREEKWATER: Choctaw Indian who befriends Lummy not long after he leaves home. Dan refused to leave when his people were herded west on what became the Trail of Tears. He nicknames Lummy “Crazy Deer Dancer.”
DORCAS TULLOS: Ben’s wife and Lummy’s friend and confidant.
J.A. KILLINGSWORTH: a recruit who befriends Lummy at a Confederate Army enlistment rally in Winfield. They leave together to go to war.
MR. AND MRS. DAVIS: owners of a mercantile in Winfield, LA who provide Lummy with friendship and his first job in Winn Parish.
MR. JAMES T. GILMORE: Winn Parish landowner and gambler who wins Susannah in a card game in Choctaw Co. and takes her to his farm. Generous to a fault, he wins slaves gambling only to set them free to live and make their way on his farm.
MR. WILEY: old Mexican War veteran and the first person Lummy meets when he arrives in Winfield, LA. Mr. Wiley takes Lummy under his wing and helps him get his first job at Davis’s mercantile. Mr. Wiley dies and Lummy performs his funeral service.
OLD BART: former slave, now secretly a freedman, who works with Ben and Lummy farming for Mr. Gilmore. Old Bart becomes like a grandfather to Lummy.
RAINY MILLS: a gun dealer who saves Lummy from hungry coyotes on the road to Winn Parish, LA. Rainy pays Lummy to deliver a shotgun to his older brother Ben whom he has not seen or heard from in several years.
SUSANNAH: a young slave woman and Lummy’s first love who was taken from Choctaw County, MS to Winn Parish, LA when James T. Gilmore won her in a card game. Lummy leaves his home to find her and does so in Winn Parish. Lummy eventually marries her Christmas Day, 1861.
THOMAS “POOLE” POOLE: Lummy’s childhood best friend who lives in Choctaw Co., MS.
