Chapter Ten

Friday, when Heather came into Mrs. Gable’s class, she was so wound up. “Guess what?”

“What?” I asked, wondering what in the world had Heather so excited.

“Todd’s dad talked to my dad and offered him a job.” Heather was smiling wide; her eyes sparkled with excitement.

“That’s great!” I exclaimed.

“I know. The only thing is...”

“What?” I prodded.

“... We might have to move,” Heather finished telling me her news. At first, I thought it was good news. Now, I wasn’t so sure. We had just begun to become friends. Surely, she couldn’t be moving away now.

“That’s great,” Robin said.

“I know. I’m so excited. Todd’s father’s company has a branch office in California. Can you believe it?” Heather exclaimed.

“Wow. Todd, why did you guys ever move away? California. That’s such a cool place to live,” Robin said.

“It was neat. My dad had to transfer here and get this company going so we all came with him. We may have to move in a couple years.”

“You might have to move again?” I asked, still trying to absorb the news that Heather might be leaving. Now, Todd might be leaving, too. Maybe not as soon as Heather, but the thought of him leaving didn’t make me feel very good. Secretly, I was hoping he would live here forever.

“Okay class. Enough with the socializing. It’s time for class to begin,” Mrs. Gable said, ringing the bell on her desk.

Mrs. Gable assigned us a poem to write. She said it had to be longer than three lines and should rhyme unless it was a haiku.

After class, Heather walked with me to my locker so I could get my math book. “I can’t believe you might be moving away.”

“I don’t know for sure yet. If I do, we can always write.”

“I guess. It just wouldn’t be the same.” I sighed.

“Heather,” Jamie called, hurrying over to where we were standing, Rachael trailed along side of her.

“We just wanted to tell you how cool it is that your dad is going to work at Todd’s dad’s company. It’s really something. Just think. You’ll be living in California,” Rachael ranted on excitedly.

“It’s not for sure yet. He has to go out there first before he decides,” Heather told them.

“It’s still way cool. Call us later, okay?” Jamie suggested.

Heather hesitated a moment and then said, “Sure.”

“You’re actually going to call them after the way they treated you?” I asked after they had walked away.

“Yeah. I think I am. If you hadn’t given me a chance, I wouldn’t have changed. Someone has to be the bigger person. I need to forgive them, too. Just like you forgave me,” Heather said.

Nodding my head in agreement, I knew she was right. Heather and I had both learned a lot about forgiveness and friendship. Now she was going to have a chance to show Jamie and Rachael. I know that no matter what happens, a special friendship had formed between Heather and me. A friendship that was destined to last.
