Rather than seeing rubbish as a blight on the landscape, see it as an opportunity to be kind to the community.
Instead of feeling cross about how horrible it looks, aim to pick up a few pieces of rubbish you spot each day. We tend to care for our environment more when it is already in a good state, so your small act may inspire others to do the same.
As well as creating beautiful spaces, picking up rubbish could also help keep your neighbourhood safe. A survey by Keep Britain Tidy showed places that have the lowest levels of litter, fly-posting and graffiti are also those least at risk from crime. This relates to what’s known as the ‘broken windows theory’, which says that maintaining urban environments to prevent small crimes helps to create an atmosphere of order and lawfulness, which then prevents more serious crimes.
