Forget about airbrushing your life and choose to be authentic instead.
It’s common to try to present ourselves in the best possible light. Sometimes we put on a glossy front and don’t say how we are really feeling. Being honest about our thoughts, our lives and our feelings is a form of kindness. It gives other people the freedom to be honest as well, by creating a safe and authentic space where we can say how we really feel and be who we truly are. It makes for real conversations and improves the well-being of everyone around us. It is also one of the most liberating things you can do for yourself – so shake off the shackles of perfection and be your real self.
Being dishonest is tied in with our self-esteem. Research by psychologist Robert Feldman found that as soon as people feel that their self-esteem is threatened, they immediately begin to lie at higher levels. Men lie the same amount as women, but they tend to lie to make themselves look better, while women are more likely to lie to make the other person feel better.
