The wind roared at him as he exited the RV, but nothing would put him off his kill. He had worked so hard for this—manipulating the private eye, taking his victims in a specific order. All so it could lead to this. His grand finale.
As he walked around to the back of the vehicle, he let his eyes roam around the scene. It had been years since he’d come out to this particular spot. This was where he was declared missing, he realized as he opened the back of the truck. This was the last place any human being knew for sure he was alive. It drew out the anger from inside him.
“All right, time to play,” he said into the back of the dark RV.
Inside, the shadow moved. The killer watched her slowly crawl her way toward the door, every movement slow and hesitant. It was like she was heading toward her death, and he supposed she was. But first, she had to watch those around her die. Those were just the rules.
“Come on,” he spat. “Hurry the hell up.”
Diane crawled faster but still didn’t meet his expectations. He reached out and snatched up a clump of her hair. She let out a high-pitched wail as he yanked her from the RV and into the open-aired night. The forceful breeze worked with him as he slammed the doors shut.
“Where are you taking me?” Diane asked.
“You’ll see.”
The killer dragged her toward the edge of the cliff and peered over. It was a huge drop—maybe three or four hundred feet—making him feel a little dizzy simply looking at it. He pulled Diane around, making sure she got a good look at the things to come.
“See this?” he yelled above the roaring wind. “This is where your lover is going to die.”
“You’re sick.”
“Duh.”
The killer pulled her away, tossing her to the ground by his feet. She curled up there in a ball, unmoving even as the clouds clashed up a storm and started to rain down on them. He had no problem believing she would stay there while he went back to the RV and collected his rope, smiling to himself the whole time.
History is going to repeat itself, he thought, his smile growing wider.
But this time, I get to change the ending.
