I, too, was bound for Five Rivers, on a freelance assignment to interview two women who had succeeded where so many fail in making a difference. They got the Forest Service to stop using toxic Agent Orange defoliants—2,4-D and 2,4,5-T—in their community. Now they were working to ban cell phone towers. I thought I could learn from them about organizing and persistence. What can one person do? In a world of war and lies and inequality and injustice I wanted to tell a positive story. I was looking for reasons to hope.
