Baptismal Font

Our temples feature baptismal fonts, which are utilized for baptisms on behalf of the dead. These fonts are located below where the living are accustomed to gather, as per the scriptural instruction, “The baptismal font . . . was commanded to be in a place underneath where the living are wont to assemble” (D&C 128:13). Why below the ground level? Because “the baptismal font was instituted as a similitude of the grave” (D&C 128:13). Connected with this, baptism is called a “burial” (JST, Gen. 17:5; Rom. 6:3–4, 6; D&C 76:51) (see entry “Oxen, Twelve”).
