Hands, Laying on of

When the Levites were called to the service of the tabernacle, they were purified and then they offered a sacrifice of a young bullock. Afterward, “the whole assembly of the children of Israel” gathered together and laid “their hands upon the Levites” (Num. 8:9–10). The practice of laying on of hands in the setting of the temple could be interpreted to signify the transference of power from the mortal administering the ordination or ritual to the recipient of the blessing.
