A Note on the Text

There are many editions of English statutes and case reports, including William Rastell, ed., A Collection in English, of the Statutes now in force, continue from the beginning of Magna Charta (London, 1598). I have sometimes modernized punctuation and spelling of historical documents and early publications for the convenience of the reader. Translations are my own, except for Sidney’s correspondence with Languet. Later editions of The Third Part of the Reports of Sir Edward Coke translate Twyne’s Case (3 Co. Rep. 80b), which first appeared in legal French in Le Tierce Part des Reportes del Edward Coke Lattorney generall le Roigne (London, 1610).
