This bolt action, centerfire repeating rifle is a versatile longarm, having been produced in more variations and configurations than any other of the manufacturer’s firearms. The rifle is divided into roughly three historical categories, the original variations having been made from 1936 to 1963; at that time, the rifle was redesigned to a large degree, actually downgraded in an effort to meet rising costs, but to hold the retail price. This series of variations was produced from 1964 until 1972, at which time the rifle was upgraded and the retail price increased. Additional changes have been made in years since. The venerable Winchester Model 70 was discontinued in 2006.
