Forward

This book is based on the recollections of several veterans of Third Army who served with Lieutenant General George Patton. Dates, places, and major incidents were taken from the history of Third Army; from the written memoirs of participating American generals; from the writings of reputable German historians, including Albert Speer and Clemens M. Hutter; and from personal interviews with German civilians soon after the War ended. Additional content is based on conversations with a friend, Jean Burgoyne, a former member of a French Maqui cell that operated in Paris during the German occupation, and her husband, who served with the Free French under Charles deGaull.

Special thanks is given to long-time friend, former S/Sgt Robert Forsgren, AUS, of Bountiful, Utah, who served with Patton’s Field Headquarters from Normandy to Bad Tolz, for his insight and advice.
