As Eddie opened the glass door to Magnolias, the bell chimed above his head. He frowned as the entire room of patrons glanced over at him. He made a mental note to tell Micola the bell was a no-go.
He did a quick scan of the restaurant, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, eggs and syrup kindling his appetite. He spotted Kate sitting at a booth near the back, sipping coffee and flipping through some papers. She looked up and gave him a smile and a wave. Eddie waved back and crossed the maroon carpet through the narrow rows of tables and booths lined up along the front window.
“Mornin’, Kate,” he said, sliding into the seat across from her.
“Good morning,” she replied.
They placed their order and began looking over the documents for the restaurant. He took every opportunity to casually look into Kate’s blue eyes. When a silky brown curl fell in front of her face, he resisted the urge to reach over and gently move it away. He pinched the top of his hand to stay focused. Her voice was so soothing, calm and quiet, with a hint of sweetness that drove him wild. He could listen to her all day.
When their business had finished, they rose from the table. Most of the patrons had left and the restaurant was quiet. Eddie paid the bill, took the papers from Kate and opened the door for her. They walked together to her car and shook hands. He lifted her hand to his lips and gave it a quick peck.
“Thank you, Kate. You’ve been a big help with all-a this.” He flapped the paperwork. “Mrs. Fortunato is gonna’ be real happy.”
He thought he saw a glow rise in her cheeks as she chuckled.
“You’re very welcome,” she said. “I’m happy to help.”
He smiled and nodded. “Alright then. I’ll be in touch.”
“Have a wonderful day, Eddie.”
Kate waved and got into her car.
Eddie smiled and nodded as he strutted across the street to Micola’s car, satisfied with his productive morning with the beautiful Kate.
