Justin and Josh were all ears. We went through a bunch of homework and they actually got it. I guess I had a way of explaining things better than the teacher. Or maybe they just wanted real bad to not have to go to summer school.
Two hours later, I hopped into a cab and finally made it to Bonney’s room. I stopped just before the door and took a deep breath. I walked in real quiet and stopped near the door so I wouldn’t spook Seldon.
Well, that wasn’t gonna happen, ’cause Seldon was fast asleep. He was still holding Bonney’s hand, but he was sawing it off with his head tilted toward his shoulder. I guess he wasn’t getting much sleep either these days.
I looked over at Bonney and, all of a sudden, I realized she was awake. Holy moly! My mouth dropped wide open and I blinked a few times. She looked up at me and smiled. That’s when I realized she was holding the picture of Mario and Maria in her free hand. She had a tear running down her cheek.
“You’re awake! SHE’S AWAKE!”
I bolted down the hall to the nurse’s station.
“SHE’S AWAKE! BONNEY’S AWAKE!”
My sneakers caught on the tile floor as I stopped in front of the nurses’ station. I changed my motion real quick to go right back toward her room. I must have looked pretty ridiculous. I didn’t care one bit. I was back in her room in a shot.
“Bonney!”
That’s all I could get out before a herd of nurses rushed in behind me. One of the nurses shook Seldon’s shoulder and he popped up.
“Huh?” He looked around the room, all surprised-like.
“Seldon, she’s awake! Bonney’s awake! ”
“What?” He looked over at her, stunned.
“I’m sorry, young man, we’ll need to get closer to Bonney. Could you please step over there?”
Sure.
We watched from the foot of the bed while the nurses did their thing. I texted Aunt Tina and Mom, and the doctor came in.
I had so much adrenaline running through me I wanted to jump up and down and outside my own skin. Seldon had the widest eyes I ever saw and just kept staring at Bonney. She was all covered up by the nurses and the doctor now though.
They finally shooed us out of there and told us to go sit in the waiting room down the hall. Mom and Aunt Tina got there lickety-split.
We jumped up as soon as we saw them get off the elevator.
Aunt Tina ran by us with the biggest smile on her face.
“You two stay here!” Mom gave me a hug and ran behind Aunt Tina toward Bonney’s room.
Seldon and me tried to sit down but we were antsy and we kept pacing back and forth, in different directions. If I looked anything like Seldon, I probably had a dopey grin on my face, but I didn’t care. All I cared about was one thing.
Gricelle was right. We finally had our miracle.
