Chapter Two

INTERLUDE: KHULAN

She studied the building from a coffee shop located across the street, but Khulan didn’t bother trying to probe any deeper than the stiff magical barrier erected carefully around the space.

Khulan knew she could simply annihilate the shield, but that would tell the man inside more than he needed to know right now. Similarly, she could open it up to penetrate, but there was no way to do that and not leave a mark that she had been here.

It wasn’t that imperative that she get inside. At least not yet.

Local contacts had been able to provide her a little bit of background on a Seattle company called Holt & Ogden, LLC. Had she lived in the West, they might have even been the sort of folks she might recruit or at least hire, but they were innocents in the larger picture of things.

Still, those two men had stepped into something larger. She would need to investigate them closer. Perhaps ensure that they were not working for her ancient enemy, even accidentally.

Eventually, Khulan would find the way to destroy Koschei the Deathless.

And anyone who served him.
