The best part about peach season was the homemade ice cream. We always had vanilla ice cream throughout the summer, but the fresh peach ice cream was the best. We’d take turns cranking (it took all ten of our extended family members taking a turn to get it just-right frozen). I loved putting the old-fashioned rock salt on my tongue and letting it melt until my eyes squinted. The chunks of fresh peaches and the yellow cream heavy with sugar were so good, and it was the only time all year that we were allowed to make this dessert our meal. It was so hot in August that it was about the only meal anyone wanted to eat.
