About the Authors

James E. Hughes Jr., Esq.

A retired attorney and resident of Aspen, Colorado, Jay is the author or coauthor of Family Wealth: Keeping It in the Family; Family: The Compact Among Generations; Cycle of the Gift: Family Wealth & Wisdom; Voice of the Rising Generation: Family Wealth & Wisdom; Family Trusts: A Guide for Beneficiaries, Trustees, Trust Protectors, and Trust Creators; and numerous articles on family governance and wealth preservation.

Jay is the founder of a law partnership in New York City and has spoken at numerous international and domestic symposia on avoiding the loss of family wealth described in the “shirtsleeves-to-shirtsleeves in three generations” proverb and on growing families’ human, intellectual, social, spiritual, and financial capital.

Jay is a member of various philanthropic boards and a member of the editorial boards of various professional journals. He is a graduate of the Far Brook School, which teaches through the arts; The Pingry School; Princeton University; and the Columbia School of Law.

Dr. Susan E. Massenzio

Susan is a psychologist who sees wisdom as core to counsel. She is the cofounder and copresident of Wise Counsel Research, a think tank and consultancy. She is coauthor of Cycle of the Gift and Voice of the Rising Generation.

Susan has extensive experience consulting to senior executives, leadership teams of Fortune 500 companies, and heads of family businesses. She helps firms develop high-potential executives, plan leadership succession, and integrate key leaders into new roles. She helps family leaders make a positive impact through enhanced communication, decision-making, cultivation of the next generation, and philanthropy.

Susan served for many years as the senior psychologist for John Hancock Financial Services, a senior vice president at Wells Fargo, and professor and program director at Northeastern University.

Susan is a member of the Collaboration for Family Flourishing. She holds a PhD in psychology from Northwestern University and a BA in sociology and education from Simmons College.

Dr. Keith Whitaker

Keith is an educator and cofounder and copresident of Wise Counsel Research, a think tank and consultancy. He is coauthor of Wealth and the Will of God, Cycle of the Gift, Voice of the Rising Generation, and Family Trusts. He is also author of numerous books and articles in the field of classical political philosophy.

Keith has many years’ experience consulting with advisers to and leaders of enterprising families. He helps families plan succession, develop next-generation talent, and communicate around estate planning. With a background in education and philanthropy, he enables family leaders to better understand their values and goals as well as to have a positive impact on the world around them.

Keith served as a managing director at Wells Fargo, where he founded the innovative Family Dynamics Practice. He has also served as a researcher at the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy, and as an adjunct assistant professor of philosophy at Boston College.

Keith is a member of the Boston Estate Planning Council and a founding member of the Collaboration for Family Flourishing. He holds a PhD in social thought from the University of Chicago and a BA and MA in classics and philosophy from Boston University.
