How would you like it if the school scheduled a teacher/student interview, during which your performance as a parent was critically examined? For your son to stay home, or to be kept outside a room where he knows that two of the most powerful people in his life are having a long and intimate discussion about him, is bound to provoke some strong feelings in him. And they won’t be very positive feelings.

As an individual and as a human being, he has a right to be present when his mother and his teacher are evaluating him. Not only does his presence enable him to put his point of view, but it can improve the inter-relationships among all three of you. There can be open discussion about problems, and there’s less chance of anyone pulling the wool over anyone else’s eyes.

As an equal participant in the discussion, he will feel increasingly confident and mature in dealing with the adult world.
