Chapter 11: The Ride

Keeping a good distance between himself and the gang, Jack tried to listen in on what they were saying.

“What d’ya think we’ll find at the next place?” called out one.

“Dunno,” said another, “but I’m getting thirsty for gold!”

“Shut your traps!” growled Callous. “I told you to keep your mouths shut. We don’t want anyone muscling in on our action.”

The men grumbled in agreement.

This little conversation gave Jack an idea. He’d forgotten all about the second clue. If he could somehow get to the next location before Callous and his gang, then he could call the police and capture them before they went any further.

Quietly, Jack pulled out Mr. Garcia’s drawing as he walked. The second clue was of a building at the top of a mountain.

As soon as he was in a stationary place, he could use his Double-A device to find the location.

Callous Carl and his gang stepped from the trail and onto the open road. Sticking close behind, Jack hid behind a tree as he watched. There, a few yards away, was a small truck. Hitched to the cab was a small trailer with a tarpaulin on top.

Callous was probably going to try and hide the treasure underneath the tarpaulin and smuggle it back to his headquarters. Jack, however, was thinking of a better, more immediate, use for the hiding place it provided.

As the men were climbing into the truck, Jack made a break for it. He ran from the forest and toward the trailer.

Lifting the tarpaulin, he crawled underneath. Within moments, the truck started up and the trailer began to roll. Callous and his men hadn’t seen Jack. Now they were off to the next clue, with Jack going along for the ride.
