THE NEXT FEW MOMENTS were some of the most intense and spectacular that I have ever experienced in my entire life. With guns at the ready, Cal and I burst into the old factory building, and into the heaviest barrage of gunfire I have ever seen. It was as if time was moving in slow motion. I saw countless enemy soldiers, dressed in military gears that feature the logo of the Mega Corporation. Their bullets flew at us relentlessly, but we weren't backing down, and our guns fired back in kind. One by one, I swept my barrel over their chests and pulled the trigger. There was a brief flash from the end of my rifle, and then my foe would be thrown backward by the force of the bullet striking him. With Cal at my side, we moved with the precision of a Special Forces military unit. Nothing could stop us!
We moved room by room, enemy by enemy, just as Cal had said we would. Once every enemy soldier had fallen to the ground we would sweep into the next room and repeat the process. We did this systematically and with great precision until the bottom floor had been totally cleared. We paused briefly to dispose of our empty magazines and load fresh rounds into our rifles, before proceeding up the large flight of stairs that took us to the second floor. We burst out onto the second floor in the exact same manner as we had the first floor. Instead of a series of small rooms, the top floor was just one massive open room. As before, Cal broke to the left and I whirled right, searching for anyone from the Mega Corporation.
The top floor was empty. Apparently, our initial barrage had been effective, because all that remained were a few at the windows, already dead. The only other object in the room was a large vending machine.
“Is that it? Is that all of them?” I asked, breathlessly, not ready to accept that we had succeeded.
“It looks like it,” Calvin said, panting. “And there's the vending machine! Nice work, Alex!”
“Let's just get the key and get out of here,” I said. “This doesn't feel like the end.”
Calvin nodded and set to work on the vault, while I took up a spot at one of the windows, searching for reinforcements. I heard my friend punching buttons furiously, but I didn't take my eye off the desert below. Finally, I heard Cal call out.
“I got it! I have the key!”
I looked over my shoulder and saw him brandishing a small jade colored key.
“Can we get out of here now?”
“Absolutely,” Cal said. “There's a portal built into this vault, all I have to do is-”
A strange rumbling sound made both of us freeze in place.
“What was that?” Cal whispered.
I turned and looked back outside, but I could hardly believe what I was seeing. From the sands just outside the building complex, strange shapes were rising! They looked like humans, but deformed and partially decayed from years of rotting!
“You've got to be kidding me,” I muttered. “ZOMBIES!! Cal! Get us out of here now!”
“I'm working on it, but it will take a few minutes! Alex, you have to hold them off!”
“Sure I do,” I growled. “Alright zombies, let's have some fun.”
I lifted my rifle to my shoulder and squeezed the trigger.
