Sewing Sundries

D-rings

I’ve used these for the Gwen belt. They are perfect for a child’s belt as they adjust for a perfect fit, even as the child grows.

Popper tape

Just a bit easier than sewing on individual poppers, you do need to make sure that you have aligned one half of the tape accurately with the other so that the poppers meet, for example at the closure of the Lilly duvet cover.

Washable glue stick

I find a glue stick really handy for holding fabric in place temporarily before appliqué (particularly when I don’t want to use a fusible interfacing/webbing). I use Coccoina as it is solvent free, washable and doesn’t stain.

Fusible interfacing and fusible webbing

An interfacing is used when the project requires stiffness, like the Isabel baskets. The brand Vilene makes many different kinds of iron on (fusible) or sew in, all in different weights. (I used Vilene’s Decovil 1 Light, which is a firm interfacing, for the base of the Isabel baskets.) Vilene also make Bondaweb, a lightweight fusible webbing that is like a permanent ‘double-sided’ sticky tape but for fabric. You fuse it to one fabric (with heat/iron) then peel off the backing paper and fuse it to another fabric, and it is perfect for appliqué.

Thread

For quilting, piecing fabrics together and quilt stitches I usually use one cream colour thread for everything: Colour 169 by Gutterman, either 100 per cent polyester or 100 per cent cotton. For other projects I will match the thread colour to the fabric. It’s nice to build up a rainbow collection of threads over time.

Stuffing

I used 100 per cent polyester, which is machine washable and hypo-allergenic. Natural wool stuffing is also a good choice.

Buttonhole elastic

Ideal when making an easily adjustable waistband.

Quilt wadding (batting)

There are many kinds of wadding (batting) available. I use 100 per cent cotton as it is soft, natural and hypo-allergenic.
