Sometimes, a hairstyle is more about the accessories than about the actual do. You know, those times when you just can’t pass up those cute barrettes, that classy clip, that beautiful scarf…Maybe some glitz, glam, even a little bling to surprise your friends? The accessories in this chapter can also be used with any of the other styles in the book — feel free to get creative and mix things up!
A comb, several fairly long flat barrettes, styling mousse, hair spray.
TIP
Choose different barrettes to adapt this style to any occasion — something simple for work, sparkly for a night out, or loud for a vacation.
1 Part your hair to one side, then straighten and separate out a section in the front.
2 Apply some mousse to this section and smooth using your fingers or a comb.
3 Roll this section up over itself to create a flat swirl.
4 Secure using barrettes, setting the first barrette across the twirl. Spritz with hair spray.
A curling iron, several barrettes, hair spray
TIP
For a bohemian variation, choose small barrettes and set them among thin strands of hair.
1 Curl your hair with a curling iron.
2 Spray with hair spray as you fluff using your fingers.
3 Pull out a small section from the front and twist back, setting it with a barrette on the side.
4 Repeat for a second small section. Feel free to add a third section and barrette.
A brush, several flat barrettes
TIP
To create more volume, tease the top of the first section of hair and set the barrettes so as to puff up the hair.
1 Brush your hair well to make sure there are no tangles, then pull it straight back.
2 Separate out a main section of hair, then twist.
3 Clip a barrette onto the twist.
4 Pull out another section of hair and twist, clipping another barrette onto the twist next to the first. Continue the process with as many barrettes as desired, keeping them flat on the back of the head.
A brush, a decorative hair comb, straightening spray
TIP
If your hair slips out of place, spray some hair spray just around the comb to stabilize it. This will leave the rest of your hair soft and flexible.
1 Brush your hair and spray with straightening spray.
2 Grab a section of hair on the side and pull it back.
3 Insert the hair comb with the teeth going toward your head, but the front of the comb facing toward your head.
4 Flip the comb back, then push it in firmly to fix the section in place.
Fresh flowers that will hold up (e.g., roses, baby’s breath), a comb, one large alligator clip, fringe pins
TIP
To avoid damaging the petals, make sure the fringe pin goes through the firm center of the flower.
1 Clip the front half of your hair forward with the alligator clip, then use a comb to lightly tease the remaining hair on top in order to create a firm base.
2 Remove the hair clip and divide the front hair into three smaller strands. Twist each one and secure it with fringe pins to the base of the teased hair.
3 Stick a fringe pin through the center or stem of each flower.
4 Scatter the flower pins throughout your hair.
A long piece of ribbon, one hair elastic, one small clear elastic
TIP
For a romantic bohemian effect, you can fasten some loose ribbons to the base of the ponytail.
1 Make a ponytail and secure it with a hair elastic, then pass the middle of the ribbon through the elastic and wrap it once around the base of the ponytail to hide the elastic.
2 Knot the ribbon underneath the base, then crisscross the two lengths of ribbon across the ponytail.
3 Continue crisscrossing the ribbon the whole way down the ponytail.
4 Knot the ribbon at the bottom and place the small elastic just below the knot. Tie a bow with the ribbon on top of the elastic to conceal it.
A large square scarf, one bobby pin
TIP
Place the scarf over your forehead, not right at the hairline — direct contact with skin will prevent it from slipping.
1 Fold the scarf into a triangle shape.
2 Place the base of the triangle at forehead level, putting pressure on the sides of your head as you pull the scarf back.
3 Make a large knot on the side using the edges of the scarf.
4 Tuck the point of the triangle underneath the knot and secure the scarf with a bobby pin.
A large rectangular scarf, one bobby pin
TIP
The size of the scarf should be based on the length of your hair, so that the scarf ends are either shorter or longer than your hair.
1 Fold or roll up the scarf to make it into a wide strip with the far edges in a point. Place it flat over your head, with your hair loose, and the two ends of the scarf toward the back.
2 Tie the two ends of the scarf at the lower back of your hair, slightly askew on the head.
3 Set with a bobby pin and drape the scarf ends forward over one shoulder.
A fairly thin scarf, two bobby pins, fringe pins
TIP
If you have short or mid-length hair, forget about the bun and just let your hair down, or pull it into a ponytail.
1 Pull your hair up into a quick bun and secure with fringe pins.
2 Fold the scarf lengthwise into a strip and place on the nape of your neck, holding an end of the scarf in each hand.
3 Pull the two ends forward and tie into a pretty, off-center bow.
4 Secure with bobby pins concealed behind the bow.
