larger birds
Using a small hard brush and noboku, begin with the eyes by painting an irregular dot for the eyeball, surrounding this with a few short straight strokes, being sure to leave a touch of white. Follow the eyes with a swift "v" stroke for the beak. Having established the tilt of the head, commence building the head, bringing out any telling characteristics of the bird. The feathers on the body are built upon each other in a series of strokes which follow the contour, suggesting the solid form underneath. Retain the deeper tones of sumi for the heavier part of the bird, while keeping outer edges paler and softer. The tones also become deeper and darker towards the tail. Before the feather strokes are entirely dry, add noboku touches for accent.
The feet, if shown, are painted quickly in noboku. They identify the position of the bird and add a rugged contrast to the soft plumage.
