papaya and orange breakfast shake
serves 1
185 g (6½ oz/1 cup) chopped red papaya
freshly squeezed juice of 1 orange
250 ml (9 fl oz/1 cup) non-dairy milk, such as oat, almond, rice or coconut milk
¼ teaspoon natural vanilla extract
1 teaspoon green barley grass powder (see note)
1 teaspoon maca powder (see note)
Put all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until well combined and smooth. Serve immediately.
Note: Green barley grass (Hordeum vulgare) powder comes from the seedling of the barley plant. It is usually harvested about 200 days after germination, when the shoots are less than 30 cm (12 inches). It is a concentrated source of nearly three dozen vitamins and minerals and is particularly rich in vitamins, calcium, iron, potassium and chlorophyll. Unlike most plants, barley grass provide all nine essential amino acids (those which your body can’t produce). It is available in powdered form from most health food stores.
