The first S&W K-frame was the 38 Hand Ejector which later became known as the 38 Military & Police. This model was introduced in 1899 and has been in continuous production. During the last 96 years, S&W has produced over 5 million of these revolvers, resulting in numerous variations which affect values only slightly. The most collectable of these, the 38 Hand Ejector First Model, can be easily recognized by the lack of a locking lug located on the underside of the barrel and the serial number 1 through 20,975. Between 1899 and 1940 this model was available with both fixed sights and an adjustable target sight. The target model, referred to as the 38 Military and Police Target Model, brings a premium price and was the predecessor to all K-frame target models.

At the end of WWII the “V” serial number prefix was changed to “S,” which was continued to 1948 when the series again reached 1,000,000. Add 50 percent for U.S. military markings (beware of fakes!).

Revolver; double action; 38 Spl.; 6-shot; 2-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch, 8-3/8-inch barrel; 9-1/8-inch overall length; weighs 34 oz.; blue or nickel finish. It took some years after WWII to re-establish commercial production and begin catching up with civilian demands at S&W. By the early ‘50s the situation was bright enough to warrant introducing a 4-inch version of the K-38, which was designated the 38 Combat Masterpiece. Its only nominal companion was the 22 Combat Masterpiece and no attempt was made to match loaded weights, as in the K-series-the 38 weighing 34 oz. empty, compared to 36-1/2 oz. for the 22 version. Barrel ribs were narrower than the K-series and front sights were of the Baughman, quick-draw ramp pattern, replacing the vertical surface of the K-series Patridge-type. No longer in production.

Revolver; double action; 22 Jet; 6-shot; 4-inch, 6-inch, 8-3/8-inch barrel; 11-1/4-inch overall length (6-inch barrel); weighs 40 oz.; 1/8-inch Baughman ramp front, adjustable S&W micrometer-click rear; checkered walnut grips with S&W medallion; blued finish only. Starting in the late ‘50s, there was considerable interest in converting K-22s to centerfire wildcat (i.e., nonstandard cartridge) configurations usually being chambered for a shortened version of the 22 Hornet, known as the 22 Harvey K-Chuck. With the intent of capitalizing on this interest, S&W introduced the 22 Remington CFM or centerfire magnum cartridge – also termed the 22 Jet – and the Model 53 chambered for it. The 22 Jet was a necked-down 357 case, designed to use a bullet of .222-inch to .223-inch diameter. The Model 53 was supplied with six chamber bushings, adapting it for firing 22 rimfire ammo, by means of repositioning the striker on the hammer. Alternatively, a standard 22 LR cylinder was offered as a factory-fitted accessory at about $35.30 for interchanging with the 22 Jet cylinder. Introduced 1960; dropped 1974.

Smith & Wesson Military Model of 1917
Revolver; 45 ACP, 45 Auto Rim. Entry of the U.S. into WWI found facilities unable to produce sufficient quantities of the recently adopted Colt Government Model auto pistol, so approximately 175,000 Smith & Wesson revolvers were manufactured, being chambered to fire the 45 ACP cartridge by means of the two 3-shot steel clips; also fires the 45 Auto Rim round. The wartime units had a duller blued finish and smooth walnut grips, with 5-1/2-inch barrel; overall length, 10-1/4-inch; weighs 36-1/4 oz. with lanyard ring in the butt. A commercial version remained in production after the end of WWI to the start of WWII, distinguished by a bright blue finish and checkered walnut stocks.
