What we once knew from the depths of the soul, a man or woman of our times would ascribe to the subconscious. The soul suggests a different order of reality, while the subconscious merely points to another level, slightly under the skin, a subcutaneous awareness.
Soul is a northern word, Norse, Germanic, Anglo-Saxon, the source of myth within us. Subconscious, on the other hand, comes from the Latin scire, ‘to know’, and is cognate with science.
