Music and language

The idea that music is an art form superior to language is an insupportable cliché. It is a belief held by many writers and critics (not Joyce) and most musicians, of course.

Language at its height is a pre-mathematical music, a pre-notational music, a system that contains its own structures and rules within each line, paragraph, stanza, story.

One could say, music is easy, language difficult, and vice-versa. To find the meaning in music can be difficult, while the meaning in language is usually apparent (but not always). To find the music in language can be difficult, while the music of music is obvious.
