The letter S

The original pictogram that evolved into the letter S was the image of a bow. Notions and suggestions of fertility surround the letter. S is the letter that makes words plural. In English, more words begin with S than with any other letter. On my computer keyboard, I notice that the most-worn letter is S and this makes me wonder if, on old typewriters, the steel character S at the end of its typebar would wear out before others.

A bow too has ancient connections to fertility. An old term for ‘fertile’ is to have ‘two strings to one’s bow’.
