Having spent a fair amount of time with the Baker Street Irregulars, I remarked to Holmes that an unusual number of them were twins.
“Ah yes, well that can come in handy,” he replied, “what with the possibility of trading places and so forth.”
“Oh dear!” exclaimed Mrs. Hudson, who was sitting with us. “You’ve reminded me, Mr. Holmes. It was my great niece Jane’s birthday yesterday, and I clean forgot all about it!” She stood up abruptly. “It’s her twin Margaret’s birthday tomorrow. I’d better try and get them both something in time for that.”
“Holmes,” I said, as Mrs. Hudson hurried off. “Do you think our dear landlady is quite alright? She seems to think that twins can have birthdays two days apart!”
“I have every confidence that Mrs. Hudson is perfectly sound of mind,” Holmes reassured me.
But how could it be that one twin’s birthday is two days after the other?
