Announcement of the Messiah’s Reign

A Psalm of David.

¹The LORD said to my Lord,

“Sit at My right hand,

Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”

110:1 — The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”

The New Testament quotes this psalm, written by David, more than any other. Jesus used this verse to prove that He, the Messiah, was both David’s “son” and David’s Lord (Matt. 22:41–46).

²The LORD shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion.

Rule in the midst of Your enemies!

³Your people shall be volunteers

In the day of Your power;

In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning,

You have the dew of Your youth.

⁴The LORD has sworn

And will not relent,

“You are a priest forever

According to the order of Melchizedek.”

110:4 — The LORD has sworn and will not relent, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

Melchizedek was a mysterious Old Testament figure who served as a priest of God long before Aaron came along (Gen. 14:18–20). The Book of Hebrews tells us that Jesus is our eternal priest (Heb. 5:6).

⁵The Lord is at Your right hand;

He shall ^aexecute kings in the day of His wrath.

⁶He shall judge among the nations,

He shall fill the places with dead bodies,

He shall ^bexecute the heads of many countries.

⁷He shall drink of the brook by the wayside;

Therefore He shall lift up the head.
