create MOTHER’S DAY cards

Spend some time with the kids and design these cute cards, using their own fingerprints to form the animal shapes. You’ll need an ink pad, card stock, a fine-tipped pen, and clean little hands. To make:

Form mommy animals with thumbprints—press thumbs into an ink pad, then onto paper—and make babies (and grown-up heads) with pinkie-prints; make two prints for penguins. Once the ink has dried, older kids or grown-ups can use a fine-tipped marker to add features and details.

Celebrate

On Derby Day, rather than mix individual drinks, make a big-batch version to fuel a crowd. This variation includes lemon for added zing.

1. Squeeze 16 lemons to yield 4 cups juice, reserving rinds. Boil 3 cups each sugar and water, stirring until dissolved. Add lemon rinds; cook until liquid becomes syrupy, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat; cool completely. Discard rinds. Stir in lemon juice.

2. Rub cut lemon wedges along rims of 16 julep cups or tall glasses; coat rims in sugar.

3. Muddle mint leaves in bottom of each glass; fill with ice and about ½ cup lemon syrup. Add 1½ ounces bourbon. Garnish with mint.
