Craft a Father’s Day Gift

Repurpose a memento from a favorite family vacation into a gift for dear old Dad. To make these coasters:

Place a map face down, preferably on a self-healing cutting mat. Using a craft knife (an adult should do this for younger kids), trace around a cork coaster, sold at craft-supply stores, to cut out circles. Brush glue sealant (such as Mod Podge) on one side of the coaster; adhere it to the back of a map circle, smoothing out any bubbles. Brush the top and sides of the coaster thinly with more glue sealant; let dry. Repeat to make a set.

• Choose grass-fed beef that is no more than 85 percent lean; a 50-50 mix of chuck and sirloin produces an extra-juicy burger; or use ground lamb, pork, or salmon (pulsed in a food processor).
• Choose a bun that is strong enough to hold it all together, such as brioche.
• When heating the grill, rub the grates with the cut side of a halved onion dipped in oil, which will add flavor to the meat.
• Always form your own patties and add mix-ins (herbs and spices; chopped raw bacon or pancetta; minced pickles or kimchi; diced chiles or adobo sauce).
