craft HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS

A ghostly gathering can haunt your house with this simple DIY.

1. Start with a plain sheet of white paper, and use a fringe cutter to cut strips along one long edge. (We used 8½-by-11-inch and 11-by-17-inch sheets.)

2. Fold the sheet over at every four-to-nine-strip interval, depending on desired width.

3. Use double-sided tape to secure ends, and scissors to round off the top edge for the ghost’s head; use a black marker to draw on a face.

4. Open ghost into cylinder shape; tape a separate, 2-by-½-inch strip of paper inside the head to form a loop, then hang with clear monofilament. Repeat with different papers for ghosts in a range of sizes.

GENTLE REMINDERS

It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Schedule your annual screening tests now. Check with the American Cancer Society (cancer.org) for guidelines.

If you live in an area with freezing winters, now is the time to have your sprinkler system professionally drained and serviced. Stake your lawn’s boundaries, and flag any sprinkler heads near driveways and sidewalks, to prevent damage during snow removal.

Winterize your car: Apply wax to protect against salt; replace washer fluid with non-freezing formula; and swap out regular tires for winter tires, if needed in your area.

Trick-or-treat safety: Use reflective tape on kids’ costumes and treat buckets to keep them visible to passing cars after dark.
