bake and decorate cookies

Before the holiday rush, make batches of doughs (here, sugar cookie and gingerbread) to keep in the freezer; roll them out and freeze on baking sheets, stacked with parchment and wrapped well in plastic (cut while still firm, the cookies will hold their shape beautifully). Then carve out a weekend for the whole family or a group of friends to do the decorating: Set out assorted cutters (or cut and bake cookies ahead of time) along with pastry bags or bottles with tinted icings, toothpicks (for drawing on details), and ribbon or twine for cookie ornaments, plus supplies for packaging as gifts (page 242).
