Already sources of easy-access storage, drawers can be made even more useful with some inexpensive dividers and smart sorting. Before you buy any organizers, it helps to empty out the drawers and sort like with like; you’ll also want to measure inside drawers carefully, noting any hinges or other hardware.
Combine your go-to knives and everyday utensils in a large drawer, separating them into right-sized bamboo (or other) boxes—juicers in one, graters in another—and lining them with cut-to-fit cork as desired for extra cushioning. Rather than getting a knife holder with presized slots, the flexible insert shown here has thin strips of soft cork that protect the blades and allow for different sizes. Either way, storing knives in a drawer instead of in the standard block frees up counter space (and you can add a safety lock to the drawer in case there are little ones running about).
It’s worth investing in a matching set (or sets) of storage containers, preferably made of glass or BPA-free plastic; they will look so much tidier in and out of use (and they just might motivate you to make items ahead and be more intentional in creating and using leftovers). Nesting units like these take up less space; sort lids by type and size and stand them up in dividers. If space allows, keep water bottles and eco-friendly bags and wraps for packing lunches and other meals on the go.
