The details: finishing touches

Each of the following provides a solution for common living-room conundrums: what to do with a mishmash of media devices; where (and why) to set up a home bar; and how to finesse the fireplace mantel. Plus, when sneaking in storage, why a custom ottoman just might be the answer.

When shopping for ways to house your sound system or streaming devices, look beyond furniture pieces specifically designated for that purpose. Here a cabinet with sliding doors and adjustable inner shelves does the job beautifully. Putting a wood slab on top (have one custom-cut at a local lumber yard or home-improvement center) gives it living-room cred. Besides providing a surface for displaying art, coffee table books, and potted plants, the credenza is also the perfect spot for a TV (and remote controls can be kept behind closed doors).

The living room will be instantly more convivial when appointed with a drinks station. A rolling cart is a classic choice, capable of being wheeled to wherever the party is—and looks lovely the rest of the time, taking up minimal space against a wall. For a similar stationary option, repurpose a credenza or armoire (such as the one on page 230). When the elements are in the open, as here, you’ll want to keep them orderly. Use trays for holding bottles, bar tools, glassware, and ephemera such as plants; touches of brass lend swankiness to the collection.
