strategize the storage
Whether it’s a dedicated space or a carved-out corner in a kitchen or mudroom, the laundry room should be set up in a way that makes gettingit all done less of a chore and more a labor of love.

As with other living spaces, thinking vertically can often be the answer.
- Make use of a wall above the washer/dryer (or next to stacked units) by installing shelves or cabinetry for keeping supplies within easy access.
- Choose shelves that are sturdy enough to hold heavy soap containers and other supplies but not so deep that things get pushed out of reach.
- When wall space is limited, use a customizable cart with mesh drawers (often meant for kitchens or closets)—which can be topped with butcher block or another counter surface, for a folding or storage surface. Add casters for space-saving portability.
aim for efficiency
Giving everything a home is a must in any organizing system, but especially for such a high-functioning room.
- Store items according to how often you use them, with occasionals (such as spare towels) on a higher shelf and your regular detergent lower down.
- It also helps to create stations by storing items by how they are used—whether for stain-fighting or mending.
- Group like items together on trays or other shallow containers, to keep them tidy and allow for easy access.
- Industrial-style steel laundry carts are convenient for rolling loads to and from the machines, and they come in different sizes to handle different loads.
- Use deep baskets or bins (ideally stackable) to cart loads of folded laundry from room to room, designating one for each location and labeling them as such (or with each person’s name, so kids can pitch in).
- Store your ironing board where it’s used. If you don’t have room for even a folding model, try getting by with an ironing blanket—such as a thick, white cotton towel—that you can put on any flat surface, even a table. Or use a steamer instead.
- Keep a small broom and dustpan at hand to whisk away spills.
Martha Must
I use my homemade muslin-covered ironing board, which sits atop my washer/dryer, to press tablecloths and other large linens. I use a smaller board for shirt sleeves and collars.
