Giving everything a home—an organizing mantra worth embracing—is so much easier to do when you employ handsome (and right-size!) containers. The sort-and-store principle will help you get and keep your supplies in order.
When drawer space is lacking, it’s even more important to tame the essentials on your desktop. Here are examples of the right tools for every job: Little lidded containers keep thumbtacks sorted and spill-free; a wooden tray with a tapered edge stops washi tape from rolling away; and a cluster of copper-plated cylinders sort out the rest. You can find similarly stylish options in a range of other materials to suit your space, in stainless steel, wood, ceramic, lacquer, or acrylic.
Basic canvas paintbrush rolls, like the one shown here, are available at art supply and crafts stores—or sew your own from a favorite fabric. Then add a grommet toeither side, at the top, and hang the roll on the wall above or near your workstation, using cup hooks (they just screw into the wall). Easy-to-use grommet kits are available online and at home-improvement stores. Slide in pens and pencils, scissors, and other slender items. Still need more storage? Hang up two side by side or in a column.
