Here are time-tested methods for storing the most common categories of items so they are preserved and protected for the long term. If you live in a damp environment, it’s worth investing in a dehumidifier for these spaces, especially a basement.
CLOTHing and linens
Avoid storing these items where they will be subjected to excessive humidity, such as in an unfinished basement.
Properly launder all your woolens before storing—hats and gloves, scarves and sweaters.
Take coats outside and brush vigorously under the collar and around the seams (where moth eggs or larvae like to live).
Thoroughly clean winter footwear with a stiff brush; stuff boots with tissue paper to retain their shape.
Hang coats in canvas storage bags. Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets to keep pests at bay (avoid mothballs and moth crystals, which contain pesticides that can be harmful to people and pets).
Store folded items (sweaters, scarves, bedding) in tightly sealed plastic containers.
ToyS
Keep outdoor toys and out-of-season playthings in one handy spot.
An open shelving unit, such as the steel model above, has adjustable shelves that can be changed over time—you can switch out toys for items like luggage, coolers, or bulk cleaning supples.
To replicate the look, pick up a bunch of wooden crates (look for them at tag sales and flea markets) and paint themin the desired shades. Or purchase color-coordinated bins.
Sort the toys by category and label bins accordingly, keeping favorite toys on lower shelves where kids can easily reach them. Have a stool on hand for getting at those items on a higher shelf. Be sure to use safety brackets to secure shelves to walls.
sports gear
A garage or mudroom offers grab-and-go convenience.
Good old-fashioned lockers have hooks for hanging uniforms and adjustable shelves for shoes and more. Mount magnetic hooks outside for holding lacrosse sticks (or other gear that doesn’t fit inside) and a mesh bag for containing balls.
The shelving unit shown here can also organize items by sport and hold lawn games for the whole family.
