SCHEDULE

Be sure to block time for important events like vet visits in the family calendar (see page 253). You’ll also want to use this checklist to keep track of all the rest.

DAILY

Feed and provide fresh water; wash food and water bowls.

Walk the dog twice a day (weather permitting; or enrich him indoors); schedule in playtime for cats.

Brush your pet’s teeth—or provide dental chew treats/toys.

Brush long-haired dog and cat breeds (to prevent matting).

Scoop out waste and soiled litter from cat box.

Go over fabrics and bedding with a lint brush.

Check dog for ticks after a romp in the woods (or backyard) depending on your region.

Treat accidents right away.

WEEKLY

Empty litter box and clean thoroughly with warm soapy water and a rag or dedicated sponge; let air-dry thoroughly before refilling.

Clean floor around pet feeding area.

TWICE MONTHLY

Launder pet bedding and soft toys in hot water with unscented detergent; use non-chlorine bleach to remove stains or caked-in dirt.

Do the same when washing outdoor apparel (coats and jackets) during the winter.

MONTHLY

Stay current on flea and tick prevention and heartworm medications.

Bathe dog or cat and clip nails (or take to the groomer).

Give your pet a thorough once-over to look for growths or other developments.

Rotate out toys (to keep them stimulated).

Replenish supply of baby wipes and biodegradable waste bags in entry or mudroom.

SEAsONALLY

Bring out (or put away) cold-weather outdoor dog apparel (including booties or pet-safe paw wax).

TWICE A YEAR

Take your pet for a routine vet examination (more frequently for puppies and kittens).

ONCE A YEAR

Schedule a thorough dental evaluation.

Celebrate their birthday with hugs and kisses (and homemade dog biscuits).
