Chapter Twenty-Seven

INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT – MOONLIGHT STREAMS IN THROUGH AN OPEN WINDOW

Reese jolts to a sitting position in bed. She pulls the covers up under her chin and strains her neck as if trying to listen for something. A loud noise is heard offscreen.

REESE

(shakes the person beside her)

Cam! Wake up! I think there’s someone in

the kitchen!

Cam leisurely rolls over, not at all concerned with a noise he obviously doesn’t hear.

REESE

(shakes him more vigorously)

Hurry! Wake up!

Reese, wearing a long T-shirt, jumps out of bed, arms at the ready to defend herself. She looks around the room for something to protect them. A crash sounds offscreen and Cam, wearing boxer briefs, leaps out of bed.

CAM

What’s going on? Reese, you okay?

REESE

(half-whispers)

Someone’s in the kitchen!

Cam and Reese tiptoe out of the bedroom, Cam in front of Reese with a protective arm stretched back to keep her safely behind him. In the hallway, Reese slowly opens a closet door and retrieves a broom. She passes it to Cam. The ruckus gets louder. Reese nervously bounces in place. Cam puts a finger to his mouth in the universal sign of “shh.”

They peek around the corner. Camera pulls back to reveal the kitchen. The noise stops and two pairs of glowing eyes look back at them. Reese screams and she and Cam go bumbling back toward the bedroom like they’re being chased by a rabid animal.

REESE

(bumping into Cam)

Holy shit! Aliens do exist!

Cam slams the bedroom door shut behind them.

CAM

(slightly out of breath and chuckling)

It’s not aliens, Nuzzle.

REESE

(breathing heavy)

What is it then?

CAM

I’m pretty sure it’s raccoons.

REESE

(eyes widening)

Racoons? How did they get in? And

what are they doing in the kitchen?

Cam puts the broom aside and leads Reese to the edge of the bed. He nods toward the open window.

CAM

I think we left one open in the other

room, too.

REESE

(sucks in a deep breath)

The pie! We left it on the counter.

Reese stands, grabs the broom.

REESE

I won that pie.

(makes a tough face)

I’m getting them out of here.

Cam rises. He faces her with his hands on her upper arms.

CAM

There’s always next year’s game.

They stare at each other, both presumably thinking the same thing: will they still be best friends next year, or something more?

REESE

(pushes out her bottom lip)

That pie was really good. I wanted

to have a piece for breakfast.

CAM

I’ll give you something better.

REESE

(eyes brighten)

Naked better?

CAM

(smiles)

You’ll just have to wait and see. Now

let’s go kick some raccoon butt.
