Chapter Thirty-Two
EXT. MIWOK CREEK – MORNING
Cam sits on the creek bank with Reese situated in front of him, his arms and legs around her to keep her warm. Recent rains have left a robust stream. Dark clouds threaten more rainfall, but our couple doesn’t care. Heavy jackets keep them protected, their obvious contentment keeps them rooted to the spot.
CAM
(kisses the side of Reese’s neck)
Best New Year’s Day ever.
REESE
(tips her head to the side, exposing more skin)
Best four months ever. Kiss of Life is
in pre-production…
CAM
You’re busy at CTC and with your podcast…
REESE
Life is good.
CAM
Very good. Our moms are inside plotting,
you know.
REESE
(unassuming)
I know. They can’t help themselves. Don’t
worry, though. They’ll relax after
we leave. I think it’s just the excitement
of us all being here together.
CAM
Have I told you today how much I love
you?
REESE
(squeezes his arms)
I love you, too. We should probably
go inside now. Nash’s game is
starting soon and we need to get
our snacks ready.
CAM
There’s something I want to ask you first.
REESE
No, we can’t watch the game naked in
the guesthouse. This is our last day
here with our parents so we need to
hang out with them. Plus, my dad’s been
looking at you funny. I need to ask him
about that.
CAM
I know why.
REESE
Really? What is it?
CAM
I told him I loved you and asked for his
blessing to ask you to marry me.
Reese spins in Cam’s arms and lands on her knees between his legs. She places her hands on her thighs. Her eyes are wide.
REESE
What did he say? I mean, I know he’d
say okay, and how nice of you to do
that! Was he surprised? Were you nervous?
Was that why you wanted to invite them
here for the holidays? So you could
talk to our parents? Not that you’re going to ask
anytime soon. But wow.
(calming breath)
You want to marry me.
Reese bites her lower lip.
Cam moves onto his knees. He faces Reese.
CAM
Would right now be too soon?
Reese’s jaw drops.
CAM (cont.)
(produces diamond ring)
Reese, I love you more than anything.
Will you marry me?
REESE
Yes, I’ll marry you! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Cam places the ring on Reese’s finger. Both stare at it.
REESE
(teary eyed)
It’s beautiful.
CAM
You’re beautiful. You’re—
His words are cut off when Reese flings her arms around his neck and kisses him.
FADE OUT.
