Genesis 11:1–9
At one time everyone on earth spoke the same language. No matter where a person went he or she could ask, “How do I get to the market?” or “How is your family?” It was wonderful! Everyone could talk to everyone else.
“Hey, I’ve got an idea,” one man said. “Why don’t we build a new city? It will be the biggest, most beautiful city ever.” Everyone agreed to work together and build a city that would be better than any other.
Some made bricks, and some dug holes for the foundations of the buildings. One day someone said, “What our city needs is a big tower, so high that it reaches the sky. Then everyone in the rest of the world will know how smart and powerful we are.”
But the smart and powerful people forgot all about God. “They think they are so great, but they are forgetting to worship me,” God said. “How can I get their attention?” He decided to mix up their language.
The next morning one workman said, “Toss me that brick.” But his buddies couldn’t understand him. “What did he say?” someone asked. But no one could understand that man either. Everyone was speaking a different language. People looked around for people they could understand.
The big tower and the fancy city were forgotten, but God wasn’t.
Becoming a Man of God
A man of God glorifies God, not himself.
This group of men got so caught up in their fancy building that they completely forgot about God. They didn’t think they needed him anymore.
God wants us to realize we need him and to remember to give him the glory for whatever gifts and talents he gives us.
A Verse to Remember
Through Jesus we should always bring God a sacrifice of praise, that is, words that acknowledge him.
