Mom’s Good Plan

Exodus 2:1–10

“Pharaoh can’t take my baby!” Jochebed declared.

“But Pharaoh gave orders to get rid of all Hebrew baby boys. How are we going to stop it?” her husband asked.

Jochebed had a plan. “Miriam, keep the baby quiet,” she told her daughter. Then she raced to the river and returned with an armload of reeds. She wove the reeds into a little basket.

When the basket was finished they went to the river, and Jochebed laid her little boy in the basket. Giving him one last kiss, she put the cover on and placed the basket in the water. “What happens to him now is in God’s hands,” she whispered.

Tears streamed down Jochebed’s face as she walked home. Miriam watched the basket float close to where Pharaoh’s daughter often came to take a bath in the river. Sure enough, a few minutes later Miriam heard the laughter of the princess and her servants. What if she sees the basket? Will she give the baby to her father? Miriam wondered.

The princess did see the basket. “Bring it to me,” she told one of her servants. “A Hebrew baby. Isn’t he cute? I will keep him.”

Miriam ran to the princess. “Your highness, would you like a Hebrew woman to be his nurse?” The princess said yes, so Miriam ran home to tell her mother. “Momma, the princess is going to keep the baby and she wants someone to take care of him.”

Becoming a Man of God

A man of God does what he can.

Jochebed loved her baby boy and she was willing to do whatever she could to keep him alive. She used the talents God gave her to make the basket.

There are times when the best thing we can do is pray and trust God with how a situation will turn out. But there are also times when we should use the abilities God gave us to solve problems.

A Verse to Remember

We must also consider how to encourage each other to show love and to do good things.
