Here’s how to do it. Hold on to the same love; bring your innermost lives into harmony; fix your minds on the same object. Never act out of selfish ambition or vanity; instead, regard everybody else as your superior. Look after each other’s best interests, not your own.—Philippians 2:2–4
Brainy Tip: We become what we focus on the most. For example, if you stay angry at someone, you will become angry.
When we focus on the love of God, rather than our anger, bitterness, or frustration, we allow him to renew our minds through the Holy Spirit, and we can be living examples of his love on earth. We will learn not to act according to our own selfish interests. Rather, we will take care of each other, truly loving our neighbor by loving God, who is love.
The key is focus: directed attention, taking all thoughts captive, and renewing the mind. We become what we focus on the most. When we allow the Holy Spirit to help us change the way we think, feel, and choose, “bringing our innermost lives into harmony” with our wired-for-love design, we truly begin to love our neighbor—we focus on his love, not our fears. We start bringing heaven to earth through our thoughts, words, and actions.
