Day 271

We must run the race that lies in front of us, and we must run it patiently.—Hebrews 12:1

Brainy Tip: Being patient does wonders for the structure of the brain.

We readily accept that it takes time to develop skill and expertise in a sport, yet when it comes to the mind, this wisdom often seems to disappear from our mental logic. We get stuck in an endless cycle of cram learning for an exam or for work and then forgetting the information the next day. Research on neuroplasticity, including mine, reveals that to develop new habits takes cycles of sixty-three days, minimum, not twenty-one days. Most people give up within the first five to seven days!

Real, long-term change that leads to transformed lives comes from persisting for at least three cycles of twenty-one days, or sixty-three days, since it takes two months for new cells to form. There is no shortcut when it comes to mind and brain change. Be patient!
